Building work began in 1806 on the Nantes- Brest canal, only 20% of which is in fact artificial. It is fed by eight rivers. Its objectives were first military, then commercial, and enabled the ports of Brittany to be linked to Nantes and thus the Loire. In 1804, joining the English Channel to the Ocean, across the mainland, was a means of avoiding the blockade imposed by the English. The canal runs for more than 50 miles, from Châtelier Lock, near Dinan, down to Rennes.
